Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention,
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Atlanta, GA)
We are pleased to announce educational internship openings for
students (advanced undergrad, grad students, new post-grad, etc.)
interested in a summer 2005 internship experience within the
Prevention Research Branch, in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention,
at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta,
Georgia. The internship period will last a minimum of 3 months.
Start dates are negotiable, but we anticipate most interns will
start in May or June 2005.
Skills and interests:
We have a number of exciting projects and have particular needs for
people who have combinations of the following skills/experience:
- Basic statistical training and skills in
conducting statistical analyses using SPSS or SAS.
- Experience conducting thematic literature
reviews and using literature searching software.
- Experience with collecting, coding and
analyzing qualitative data.
- Project coordination skills (organizational
skills, setting up conference calls, and coordinating information
to study sites).
Students should have interests and backgrounds in
areas related to HIV prevention and behavioral research (for
example, substance use; sexual risk behavior; gender and sexuality
issues; sexual abuse; behavioral theories; evidence-based
interventions; intervention development; evaluation, and
adaptation). We anticipate filling multiple internship openings,
depending on the number of qualified applicants and project needs.
Each intern will work on one of our ongoing domestic HIV prevention
research projects. We believe that these opportunities will be ideal
for students coming from a wide range of behavioral and social
sciences, as well as from public health-related disciplines.
We accept interns who are highly motivated, able to give meticulous
attention to details, who do not require a lot of close day-to-day
supervision, and who can work well on collaborative
multidisciplinary research teams. Interns would need to be available
at least 15-20 hours a week during normal office hours. We will
provide office space in Atlanta.
Compensation:
Students pay no tuition costs for participating in this internship
training program. Although we are not able to provide additional
financial compensation to the interns this summer, we anticipate
that students will benefit from having a practical hands-on public
health research and educational experience during their work at CDC.
If desired, we can arrange to work with the student's university
faculty for course credits, and/or perhaps get them involved with
presentations or publications growing out of their summer work.
There may be opportunities to continue working beyond the summer
and, depending on the circumstances, we would be willing to work
with students and their faculty on thesis or dissertation projects
from our data sets. Based on our last ten years of experience in
offering similar student training opportunities, many past interns
later were able to secure paid full-time and part-time work at CDC.
Application Instructions:
Students interested in applying for these internship opportunities
should send one single email containing the following information to
Deborah Schwartz at CDC (telephone: 404-639-1905; email:
DSchwartz@cdc.gov):
- a copy of their current resume or curriculum
vitae as a Microsoft Word file attachment;
- provide a one-page cover letter summarizing
relevant work experience and skills,
- a list of the names and full contact
information for three persons who can serve as professional
references; and
- provide complete contact information for the
intern applicant (the applicant's full name, regular mailing
address, phone numbers, and email address).
All application materials must be received by 5pm
(EST) on Friday, March 25th, 2005. We anticipate the selection
process to be completed by approximately the end of April, in part
depending on number of applications we receive that require review.
